George R. Dicus Jr., 75, of New Bloomfield, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019, surrounded by loved ones.
George, also known as Butch or Red, was born on November 22, 1943, in Pottsville, PA to George and Julia (Sema) Dicus. He graduated from Pottsville High School in 1961 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, eager to serve his country. He continued to serve as a brave young medic in the Vietnam War. He met the love of his life, Despina, while stationed in Athens, Greece, where they married on May 30, 1965. They eventually returned to Pennsylvania where they raised three daughters. George retired from the Harrisburg Post Office with 25 years of service. His favorite pastimes and hobbies included spending time with his family, model trains, summer yard work - especially cutting grass with his riding mower, spending time with his rescued pets, and taking naps.
He was loved by all who knew or met him - a kind, gentle, caring, compassionate man, with a great sense of humor.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Julia (Sema) his Brother, Thomas, and a son-in-law, Brad Badger. He is survived by his devoted wife, Despina of 53 years, his daughters, Deborah Badger, Mary Ann Allander (fiancé Dan Long) of New Bloomfield, Sandra (Tom) Weltmer of Duncannon, two grandchildren who he adored, Nicholas and Zoe, sisters, Linda (Alan) Fessler, of Minersville, Juliann Castellano, of Pottsville, brother Richard (Jeff) Ludwig-Dicus, of Allentown, many nieces and nephews, and a loving family in Greece.
A visitation at 12 noon will be held on Thursday, January 10, at Dellville United Methodist Church, 806 Dellville Rd, Duncannon, followed by the funeral service at 1:00. Pastor Mike Brossman will be officiating.
George will be buried with full military honors on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
