Joseph A. Topper, of Landisburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at the age of 73. A native of Hanover, Pennsylvania, Joe was born April 15, 1945, to the late Charles J. and Gertrude A. (Kale) Topper.
In 1963, Joe graduated from Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown. He then attended Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration in 1967 before joining the U.S. Army and deploying to the Vietnam War.
For most of his career, Joe was a CPA and auditor for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Department of Defense at various facilities, including Northrop Grumman locations, Aberdeen Proving Ground and Letterkenny Army Depot.
During his retirement, Joe enjoyed the nature surrounding his new home in Landisburg. He also spent time gardening and woodworking. But the passion of his life was evangelizing. He wrote his own gospel tract, which he freely shared with everyone he met. He proudly wore a Vietnam-veteran hat he felt enabled him to speak more freely and frequently to strangers who introduced themselves to him.
Joe is survived by his wife, Rachel D. (Yohe) Topper; his daughter, Gemma Kieffer, her husband, Seth, and their son, Benjamin; his son Matthew J. Topper and Matthew’s wife, Beth; his other son Anthony J. Topper and Anthony’s wife, Andréa; as well as his brothers, Charles J. Topper Jr.; Phillip Topper and Phillip’s wife, Tracy; sister, Judy Topper, and her husband, Jeff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His wife, family and friends will miss him greatly.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania, with Pastor Dennis Gerkin officiating.
