NEWPORT: Harriet Trout Walker, 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2014.
Harriet was born August 26, 1926 and grew up in Newport, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Millersville State Teachers College (University) she began her teaching career in Maryland and then on the US Naval Base in Trinidad, where her husband was stationed. She continued teaching in the Newport School District giving many lucky first-graders a loving start, and retired from the Harrisburg Intermediate Unit. Harriet served her community as a 4-H leader for over 20 years. She was a long-standing member of Community and Perry Valley Granges and Order of the Amaranth Towpath Court. Harriet loved singing and she loved spending time fishing with friends and family on Muskrat Lake. She was open-minded and accepting; generous; kind; and always put others first. Friends and family knew and appreciated Harriet's smart, dry sense of humor.
Harriet is survived by daughter Nancy J. Walker of Newport; son Donald E. Walker of Charleston, WV; daughter Joan L. Walker and husband Ralph Costa of Mountain Rest, SC. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack T. Walker, and parents William J. and Nettie (Yetter) Trout.
Friends are invited to visit the family at the David M. Myers Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Amaranth Services will begin at noon followed by the funeral service. Burial will be in the Newport Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Perry County 4-H Program (Attn: Becky Kaucher), Cooperative Extension Service, E. Main Street, New Bloomfield, PA. 17068 or a charity of personal choice.
