Ronald Clifford Burd, 67, died on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at his home in Elliottsburg, PA surrounded by loved ones. His death was the result of a short, valiant battle with lung cancer.
Ron graduated from Greenwood High School in 1966. He entered the United States Army in 1967 and reported for basic training at Fort Benning, GA where he was awarded a Certificate in Recognition of Outstanding Accomplishment in Physical Fitness, was later stationed at Fort Knox, KY, and Fort Ord, CA before going to Bamberg, Germany where he served as a Sergeant SP4 11B20 Co. 2d Bn 54th Infantry until December of 1969. Ron retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Motor Vehicles in 2014. He was a life-long member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Newport, PA.
Ron answered to many names: friend, husband, Dad, brother, uncle and Pappy. A few called him Ronnie or Burdie, but his nephews affectionately called him "Uncle Meanie." He loved to watch the seasons change at his Perry County home. He watched and fed the backyard birds; he loved horseback riding, camping and spending time outdoors. Most will remember him for his sense of humor and love of life and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne Ross Burd, of 45-years; their daughter Angela and her husband Wm. Todd Smith of Enola, PA; their son Kevin Burd and his partner Michael McCook of Mount Gretna, PA. Ronnie and Jeanne treasured the relationship they had, and the time spent with their grandsons Caden and Logan Smith of Enola, PA. Ron is also survived by three devoted sisters; Doris and her husband Wesley Smedley of Dauphin, PA; Shirley and her husband Larry Reisinger of Millerstown, PA; and Sandra and her late husband Wayne Heilner of Landisburg, PA; numerous family members- cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
