Joan E. Barner Smith, 62 years old, of Newport and formerly of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday December 3, 2016 in the Hershey Medical Center. She was born January 14, 1954 in Harrisburg to Joseph E. and Shirley (Romberger) Durbin, Sr. She was a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, Newport.
  Joan is survived by her husband, Ronald R. Smith; sons, Johnnie E  Hoffman III of Middletown and Jason E. Hoffman Sr. and wife Monica of North Carolina; mother, Shirley Windowmaker of Harrisburg; brother, Joseph Durbin Jr. of Harrisburg; sisters, Eleanor Yocum  of Blain, Linda Harris of Palmyra and Shirley Miller of Middletown; and grandchildren Jason E. Hoffman Jr., Vanessa E. Hoffman, Madyson P. Hoffman and Darren H,. Hoffman. She was preceded in death by her father.

  Services will be held Saturday, December 10 from the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, 9000 Creek Road, Newport, Pa. with a viewing from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
