Jane Wright Wertz, age 93, a beautiful lady inside and out, has left her life on Earth to be reunited with her beloved husband, Ray. Jane lived from October 5, 1923 to May 15, 2017. She is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, H. Ray Wertz, Jr. and is survived by her daughters, Roberta "Bobbi" Wertz-Hoy (husband, Bill Hoy) of Enola and Mary Jane "MJ" Wertz (partner, Deborah Battisti) of Lemoyne. "Aunt Jane" is also survived by 3 generations of nieces and nephews.
Jane was born in Easton, PA to Norman Wright and Lenore (Shull) Wright. After the death of her parents, Jane moved to Newport at age 9 and was further, lovingly raised by her father's sister Lena (Wright) Memminger and husband, Ira. She is also predeceased by sister, Mary “Jimmie” (Wright) Weaver and nephew, Hall F. "Butch" Weaver.
Jane graduated as Salutatorian from Newport High School in 1940 at age 16. She attended Syracuse University for 1 year and transferred to Ohio University, graduating in 1944 with a double major in Mathematics and Languages. Proud to have been a "Pi Phi Girl" in college, she remained a member of her Pi Beta Phi sorority for 75 years. She taught high school during World War II and continued substitute teaching for decades. She spent years as a part-time bank teller mostly for the socialization.
After marrying Ray in 1945, they both devoted countless hours to the Newport community throughout their lives. Jane was active in numerous organizations, including serving as President of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #177, Regent of the Perry County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Woman's Club, Civic Club, Board Member of Perry Village and Council Member/Financial Secretary of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She volunteered for many years at Perry County Recycling and continued her interest in education by tutoring with the Perry County Literacy Council.
Anyone who was acquainted with Jane knew that she was fun, loved to laugh, and had a most kind and loving heart. She always made time to help a friend and to be a wonderful wife and mother. She was an avid bridge player, joining the Harrisburg Bridge Club at a young age, and received her Life Master Certificate in 1989. Jane also loved sports. She watched and occasionally played tennis with Ray, never missed a tennis major on TV, and enjoyed baseball and Penn State football. There were no bigger fans in the stands than Jane and Ray Wertz, watching games when Bobbi cheered and MJ and Bill played.
Jane was an exceptional lady, truly a role model, and will be missed so much by so many.
