Shirley Ann (Fritz) Fry of Newport, PA, was born September 15, 1936 and the widow of Larry William Fry, passed peacefully October 24, 2019.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Lorraine Dick (Robert) and her brother, Terry L. Fritz (Carol), along with 6 nieces and 6 nephews and multiple grand nieces and nephews.
Proud of her coal mining heritage, Shirley graduated from JBJ High School (Boswell, PA), Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing and Elizabethtown College.
Shirley, after 42 years of working at the Harrisburg State Hospital, spent her last 25 years as their Nursing Supervisor. She attributed two simple mottos to
her career success: "Never tell someone to do something you would not do yourself" and "Everyone has the right to be heard."
Shirley loved German shepherds (all of hers were named Lady) and multiple barn cats throughout the years. She and her husband, Larry, enjoyed a lifetime
at the race tracks with their Trotters and, later, at late model car races. Shirley was a devoted daughter to her parents, Emma and Earl Fritz, and daughter-in-law to her in-laws,
Katherine and Frank Fry of New Bloomfield.
While active in several organizations including Trinity Church of New Bloomfield, USA Trotting Association, Penn State Alumni Association, Dirt Track Racing Association
(late models), Harrisburg Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, Shirley was also an avid golfer and was instrumental in creating the Women's Golf League at the American
Legion in Newport.
Shirley was a survivor and beat several major illnesses over the last 15 years, but finally succumbed to the severe crippling of Rhumatoid Arthritis. Though tough at work
when necessary, Shirley was one of the kindest and sweetest women God Created, was a strong spirit and will be sorely missed by all.
Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 31 at 11 AM at the Trinity Christian Church, New Bloomfield. A time of visitation will be from 10-11 AM. Burial will follow the service in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
