Carl Roush Obituary

 

Carl "Sarge" Roush, 91, of Newport, passed away on Tuesday April 2 at Stonebridge Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

Born on March 6, 1933 in Reward, PA, he was the son of the late Willard I. Roush Sr. and Mazie (Dimm) Roush.

On Sept. 8, 1956, he married his wife, Helen J. (Saylor) Roush with whom he was blessed to share over 50 years of marriage.

He is survived by a son Randy Roush (Elaine) of Newport, a daughter Sheri Gibson (Chris) of Boiling Springs; two sisters, Lois Frymoyer and Shirley Stroup, all of Millerstown; two brotherws Clarence Roush of Halifax and Willard Roush Jr. of Thompsontown; four grandchildren, Lindsay, Evan, Lauren and Brandon and one great-grandson, Colin. Three generations of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Helen, sisters Mary Rock, Thelma Goodling, Esther Campbell and Ruth Powley and brothers, Luther, Paul and Roy Roush.

Carl was employed and retired after 45 years of service at Bethlehem Steel Plant in Steelton and worked part-time at D.E. Hall's gas station in Newport. He served in the US Army from 1953-1955 and was trained as an M-48 tank driver Company C 41st Tank Battalion.

He attended Highland Presbyterian Church in Newport and was a life member of the Newport Order of Owls Club, American Legion Post #177, Citizen No. 1 Fire Company and the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Fireman's Assoc. He was a former borough councilman, former vice chairman of the Newport Sewer Authority and served on the Newport Water Authority. He was a member of F&AM Newport Lodge #381, Newport Royal Chapter #238 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg.

He enjoyed woodworking, family reunions, gardening, fixing things, going to the casino, retired steel workers breakfasts and a good cigar. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

 Services will be held Saturday, April 13 at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport with a visitation starting at 10 AM, Masonic Services at 11 AM follow by the funeral service. Burial will be in the Newport Cemetery with honors by the Perry County Military Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reward United Methodist Church, 609 Perry Valley Rd, Millerstown, PA 17062 or to the Newport Ambulance League, 50 S. 3rd Street, Newport, PA 17074
