Joanne Stine Obituary

The family of Joanne Almera (Wright) Stine of Newport announces with great sadness her passing on February 26, 2024. She was born August 20, 1935, in Snyder County and was the oldest of Donald and Lenna Wright's 13 children. Predeceased by her husband, Jay Russell Stine Jr., Joanne is survived by daughter Susan Ruth Stine Miller (Michael) of Newport, Jay Russell Stine, III (Bless) of Liverpool, and "special" daughter Pamela Jill Stine (Newport). Grandchildren Jay Russell Stine, IV (Daniella), Grand Junction, CO, Katie Nicole Stine (Brady), Claysville, PA and Odiyl Reyes Alfonso (Liverpool) in addition to Great-grandchildren Emma, Virginia and Leland Grandon. Joanne is survived by her brothers Keith, Roger, Donald, Terry and James, and pre-deceased by siblings Michael Dale (killed in Vietnam), Dennis, Thomas, Gary, Barry, Hazel Smith, and Donna Seiders.

Joanne married the love of her life on December 17, 1954, and credits herself with teaching Jay to tie shoes when he was 6 and she was 3. They were childhood neighbors for a time. Her employment began at the former Polyclinic Hospital, then with an insurance company which she left after marriage to care for her terminally ill mother-in-law. A few years after having their special needs daughter, Joanne was determined to enroll Pam in the school district's mainstream classes and began volunteering there, later hired as a Title 1 Liaison. She then returned to work in insurance but resigned from USF&G due to the demands of Pam needing someone with her.

Joanne said in her 88 years of living she has experienced everything from horse and buggy days on her grandparents' farm to the mind-boggling technology of today and had no problem texting friends and family. She had attended Newport First Church of God and was a caregiver all of her life, even moving back to PA from MD as a very young girl to help care for her ailing grandmother. After Jay retired, they travelled but her happiest place was still living in Jay's childhood home which she began sharing with him in 1954 and still lived in until her third stroke on Feb 18. Joanne was very caring, generous, and loving and will be greatly missed.

Arrangements for her cremation will be handled by David M. Myers Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family. As Joanne would have wanted in lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be sent to The Arc of Cumberland and Perry Counties, 71 Ashland Avenue, Carlisle, PA 17013. This agency has helped Pam greatly throughout the years.
