Norm E. Shea, 73, of Millerstown died December 11, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born June 28, 1944, in Sligo, PA to the late Robert and Florence Shea. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education from Edinboro University. He began his career as a middle school science teacher at Saegertown, PA. He went on to earn two additional masters degrees and his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Bucknell University. In 1977, he was hired as Greenwood’s Elementary principal, then later as Greenwood’s Superintendent of Schools.  After 23 years at Greenwood, he enjoyed 10 years of retirement before becoming Superintendent of Newport School District for four years. He also was an interim Superintendent for Juniata County School for a brief time.  After over 40 years in education, at many different levels, he has impacted hundreds of lives.

Norm was an active member of the Millerstown United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees, in addition to being acting Ad Board Chair.  He was a member of the Lewisberry Gun Club, and former president of the Millerstown Sewer Authority and former president of the Millerstown Cemetery Association. He was also a former president and secretary/treasurer of the Millerstown Lion’s Club.

Surviving is his loving wife of 44 years, Vicki Shea; a daughter, Lisa Johnson-Firth, and her husband, William, and children, Abigail and Lillian; a son, Todd Johnson, and his wife Dana; a daughter, Laurie Lesh, her husband, Jason and children Grace and Nathan; a daughter Carrie Guarente, her husband, Nick, and children Taylor, Hannah, Carly, Molly and Ryan; a son, Ben, and his wife, AnaLise; brother, Robert and wife Naomi Shea; twin brother Neil and wife, Joan Shea; sister-in-law Mary Lou Shea; sister-in-law Nancy Shea; brother, Dennis and wife Jennifer Shea; and many nieces and nephews.

Norm was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Shea and Allan Shea.

As mentioned, community service was paramount in Norm’s daily schedule.  One of the proudest contributions can be found at the Millerstown Community Park.  Norm and Vicki, along with their friends, Jim and Betty Magaro, constructed and installed the Free Little Library providing the opportunity to enjoy reading in the spirit of education and family.    Additional acts of service for others that occupied the days were mowing lawns, plowing driveways, raking leaves, maintaining the community park and town square, all the while, conversing with anyone that crossed paths.  Other passions Norm enjoyed over the years were spending time outdoors, hiking the Appalachian Trail, golfing, sailing, playing games, woodworking and running.  Norm was an accomplished runner, competing in 36 marathons including Boston, New York and London.  In 1983, he set his personal best record of 2 hours 47 minutes at the Boston Marathon.   Above all else, he made spending time with his family a top priority.  Norm and Vicki cherished life together and were seldom apart.

A celebration of life will be held at Millerstown United Methodist Church, 23 N. High St, on Saturday, December 16 with visitation from 11:00-1:00, followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Millerstown United Methodist Church, Hospice of Central PA, or American Cancer Society.
