Carrie B (Horting) Swalm Obituary

Carrie Belle (Horting) Stahl Swalm, age 96, transitioned from time to eternity this past Veterans
Day, from the comfort of her home. Faithful feline “Sleazy” lay at her feet during transition.
Born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1929, she was the daughter of Raymond L. Horting, Sr. and Verna C.
(Wieland) Horting. She was the 12 th of 15 Horting children, consisting of 9 girls and 6 boys.
Carrie attended the Red Hill School house and later Newport High School, walking to and from
school, pre-dating bus service. She was one of the last Class of 1947 graduates.
Bingo, PA lottery, casinos and carnivals brought her enjoyment. True to her birthday, she was
lucky. Word searches and Wheel of Fortune were a daily routine.
A defying specimen to her age, Carrie drove her Ford Focus, grocery shopped, scrubbed her
kitchen and; bathroom floors (only on Saturday), did laundry (only on Monday), and loyally
decorated gravesites for the holidays—up until Labor Day 2025.
Fridays were reserved for a relaxing wash and set by long-time hairdresser Vicky Shutt.
Carrie attributed her longevity to eating vegetables, lean meats and few sweets.
She made scrumptious turkey filling and sand tarts.
Carrie was preceded in death by husband Amos F. “Pete” Stahl (1976); husband Ray S. Swalm
(1998) and companion, Ray J. Campbell (2007); son, Charles E. “Casey” Stahl (2012); niece
Bonnie J. Clouser Lightner (2023); nephew Charles L. Horting (2012). Long-time friend and
classmate Carrie Smith departed this past June, ending their Sunday afternoon board game
competitions.
Carrie was the last surviving sibling of the Horting clan raised on Gypsy Hollow Road, consisting
of:
Mary Wright; Stella Thomas; Edith Roush; Florence Bitting; Arlene “Kate” Kyle; Verna “Jane”
Moll; Nellie Clouser; Virginia Little.
Horting brothers: Kenneth; Harry “Abe”; Raymond “Johnny”; Harold “Bill”; Frank and Clair
“Teddy”.
During World War II, 4 of her brothers served simultaneously.
She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews (Kim, Sue, Sally, Harry, Jr., David, Robert,
Daniel, Ken, Patty, Cindy, Cheryl, Shirley, Deb, Connie, Tracy, Todd, Brian and Elisabeth); +
grands and greats; and daughter-in-law Christine Campbell.
Carrie was briefly employed at a Harrisburg print shop, carpooling w/Dorothy Dietzel, sister to
sister-in-law Carol Horting (brother Teddy’s wife). Prior to the Agnes Flood of 1972, Carrie
worked decades housecleaning for several Newport families.
She was a Loyal Order of Moose member and PECO Fair supporter, volunteering as an exhibit
attendant.
Shout-outs to neighbor Nellie Morgan for forever checking in at Apartment 204; to niece Connie
Miller for her daily phone calls, and to husband Johnnie, for jockeying Aunt Carrie to and from
their family’s gatherings of fellowship and card playing.
Duncannon EMS (w/Monday night chauffeur service graciously provided by Lori Boyer and Jim) and
Newport Senior Center bingo buddies were her extended family. The other dozen neighbor
ladies of Newport Senior Apartments considered her theirs.
