Charlotte "Sherry" J (Mentzer) Black Obituary
Charlotte “Sherry” Jean Black, 81 of Millerstown went to be with her Lord after a
courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease on Friday, December 5 th 2025. She was
born to Howard Charles Mentzer and Lillian Anna Brown Mentzer in Clear Ridge, Fulton
County PA on May 26, 1944. Her father, Howard (Dick) was in World War II, so
Charlotte (Sherry) and Lillian lived with her parents until he was discharged. The three
of them moved to a little house in Shade Gap in Huntingdon County. Five years later,
when her brother Gary was born, they moved to Mount Union. Later, when her mothers
father sold the farmette in Clear Ridge to Howard, the family of four moved back home.
They were glad to have many family and friends close by. She began at Clear Ridge
Methodist Church as the treasurer.
She attended Fort Littleton Elementary and High School at Forbes Road in
Harrisonville, PA. She graduated in 1963 and moved to St. Thomas, Franklin County
PA. She worked as a secretary at the Coke factory. During this time, she met and
married the love of her life, Curtis Nelson Black. They were married in 1967 and moved
to Millerstown, Perry County where they rented an apartment on Market Street.
After being in Millerstown only a few weeks, Mr. RC Savercool Brick Company asked
her to come work in the brick company where she spent two years. They became close
to the Savercool family. Curt and Sherry then moved to Old Ferry to start their family
where they rented a house from Ben and Jenny Campbell who became like family.
In 1973, Curt and Sherry built their home on “the hill” in Millerstown Borough and had 2
children, Teresa Dawn and Todd Curtis.
She was a member of the Millerstown Civic Club, Millerstown United Methodist Church,
Ladies Card Club, the Perry County Historical Society, Millerstown Community Success,
Inc. where she was treasurer, helped as property manager at the Cochran-Anspach
house in Millerstown where she coordinated the Valentines Dinner.
She stayed home with her children for 10 years while Curt taught at Greenwood High
School. In 1979, she went to work for the Juniata Valley Bank in Millerstown and retired
in 2004 after 25 years.
She loved to travel where she met many lifelong friends, spending time with friends and
family, crafting, decorating her beautiful home, and cooking for her family at Monday
Night Dinners.
She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Curtis Nelson Black; her daughter
Teresa Dawn Hunker and husband, Joe; daughter-in-law, Katy Black; grandchildren
Kayla Black and husband Drew Chubb; Barak Dalton Hunker and wife Sara; Emily
Black and Zach Cade Hunker and wife Sam; great-grandchildren Beckett and Stella
who were the light of her life, and a brother Gary Mentzer and wife Becky of
Chambersburg along with nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Todd Curtis Black from a tragic accident in
2007.
In lieu of a funeral, she had planned a “Celebration of Life” which was held on March 9,
2024 at Millerstown United Methodist Church. Many friends and family came to share
stories and laughs. She thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was a true blessing to her!!
