It is with great sadness that we said a final goodbye to Douglas Earl Gilbert on November 23, 2025, a wonderful brother, uncle and friend to many. Doug exceeded at sports, especially baseball. His coaches recognized his skill and talent at an early age which only increased as he became older. He was encouraged to pursue a career in sports and was invited to try out for the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians. A loyal sports fan, he cheered passionately for the University of Pittsburgh football team and the Baltimore Orioles. He also enjoyed sprint car racing, always keeping up with the drivers, tracks and stories that made the sport special to him Doug had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He loved buggy riding, exploring the outdoors, which included visiting his favorite bridges, taking in peaceful views and discovering new waterfalls, and feeding the birds and animals that frequented his yard at his cabin in Potter County. He found comfort and creativity in cooking and cherished the time he spent with his friends – sharing meals, stories, laughter and unforgettable moments. He loved fishing, whether casting a line alone in quiet reflection or enjoying the company of others by the water. He was a proud member of the Moose, the VFW in Newport, the Owls Club, the American Legion, the Hunters Valley Sportsman’s Association and the Sinnemahoning Sportsman’s Club. Each group provided him with friendships, camaraderie and a sense of belonging that meant a great deal to him. He is preceded in death by his parents, David E. Gilbert, Jr. and Nancy C. Gilbert. He is survived by his brothers: David M. Gilbert (Wendy) and his daughter Donna Shunk and Mark A. Gilbert (Tracey) and his sons, Aaron, Devon and Ryan and an extensive family of friends too numerous to name.
