Gareld J. Helvig, 79 years old, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2026 in New Bloomfield. He was born February 5, 1947 in Tyler, MN to Vincent and Ruth (Skorzewski) Helvig.  Gary spent much of his working life serving others. He worked as a salesman for Pepsi and later for Schwan's, where he enjoyed meeting people and building relationship.  He concluded his career as a correctional officer at Lancaster County Prison.  In his free time, Gary had a remarkable talent for restoring old and broken equipment, bringing new life to items others had given up on. He was passionate about building and flying remote-control airplanes. Above all, he treasured time spent with his grandchildren, creating memories and sharing his love, knowledge and sense of humor with them. 

Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Lesher Helvig and is survived by his sons, Kyle and Cristin Helvig of Minnesota; step sons Wayne Lesher IV and Jeffrey Lesher; brother Jim Helvig;  grandchildren Hailey and Nora Helvig, Joshua, Hunter,  Ethan, Zoie and Skyler Lesher, Tarryn Evans and Chandler Little and great grandchildren Rielynn and Alelaide Evans and Vivienne Lesher. He was preceded in death by stepchildren Dwaine and Tammy Lesher., brother Lennis and sisters Bernadette and Coletta.
