George Gekas Obituary


The Honorable George W. Gekas of Harrisburg, PA, died at his home on
Thursday, December 16, 2021. George was born April 14, 1930, the son
of the late William and Mary Touloumous Gekas. George was a
graduate of William Penn High School class of 1948. George received
his B.A. from Dickinson College in 1952. He served in the United States
Army from 1953 through 1955. George received his law degree from
Dickinson School of Law in 1958. George served as Dauphin County
Assistant District Attorney from 1960 through 1982. He served in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1966
through 1974. He served as a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State
Senator from 1976 through 1982 at which time he elected to serve in
the United States House of Representatives where he served honorably
from 1983 to 2003. During his time in Washington, he served on
numerous house committees and lead many legislative initiatives.
George is survived by his lovely wife Evangeline, affectionately known
as Vangie, Charas-Gekas.
George was a member of the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral,
the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Dauphin County Bar Association,

the Camp Curtin Historical Society Christian Churches Council, Police Athletic League, and the Hershey
Racket Club.
George was a lifelong devout New York Yankees fan. He loved to play
tennis, golf, billiards, and chess. He wrote poetry, and play the piano,
organ, clarinet, and oboe. He quietly served his local community by
playing the piano at Bethesda Mission every Thanksgiving and
Christmas. George was fluent in English, Greek and Spanish and used
this to help pro-bono numerous immigrants to obtain citizenship as
well as those who needed good legal council and could not afford it.
In addition to his lovely wife, Evangeline, who  is especially appreciative for the
friendship of Dale and Dorothy Messick, is also survived by many many
exceptionally good friends and a few relatives. 
Viewing will be on Monday, December 20, 2021, from 4 to 6 at the
Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, Camp Hill, PA. The service will
be on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 beginning at 11 AM at the church.
Burial with military honors by the Dauphin County Honor Guard is in the Paxtang Cemetery.
