John H Kapp, Sr Obituary

John H. Kapp, 97, of Newport, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at
The Carolyn House. He was born August 3, 1927, in Newport to John and Lilly (Haines) Kapp.
He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Seabees Construction Battalion on Iwo
Jima. He concluded his military career by helping to disarm mainland Japan after the Japanese
military surrendered. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and retired from PPL
after 43 years of service.
John was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was also an
excellent caregiver to his wife, Martha. He enjoyed working on household projects. His most
favorite pastime was sitting on the front porch with Martha.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Martha (Marcaccio) Kapp and his survived by his son,
John H. Kapp, Jr and wife Patty of Mechanicsburg; and daughter, Cathy Tomchak of Harrisburg;
granddaughter, Allison Janosko and husband Michael; and great grandsons, Maddox and
Greyson.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Donald Kapp, George Kapp, James Edward Kapp,
and Whitey Shull; and sisters, Kathryn Quigley, Mary Ellen Shoop, Jeanette Niman and Martha
Witmer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 30 at St. Bernard’s Catholic
Church, 811 Shermans Valley Rd, New Bloomfield. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until
funeral services begin at 11:00 a.m. A burial will follow at the New Bloomfield Cemetery with
military honors by the Perry County Military Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Ambulance League, 50
S. Third St, Newport, PA 17074, or St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, New Bloomfield.
