Martha E (Barkley) Smith

Martha Elizabeth Smith, 96, of Shermans Dale, PA, went home to the Lord on 05/06/2026 at Premier at Perry Village. Martha was born September 23, 1929, a daughter of the late William and Lydia (Morrison) Barkley.

Martha was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great- great-grandmother, sister, and friend. A talented quilter, she always had a quilt in progress and delighted in passing along her handiwork and quilting tips. Martha and her husband, Smitty, were local business owners — they owned and operated Smitty's Tavern and later founded the Cly-Mar Hotel and bar, both longtime gathering places in Shermans Dale. She was active in the Shermans Dale Ambulance Association since its formation, serving in multiple roles and supporting her community with quiet dedication. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, attending gatherings, and sharing stories of days gone by.

She leaves behind her son, J. Clyde (Karen) Smith III; two grandchildren, James Smith and Jessica (Patrick) Garvick; one great-grandchild, Kaitlyn (Christopher) Harty; one great-great-grandchild, Kendall Harty; two brothers; one sister; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, J. Clyde Smith, Jr.; four brothers; and four sisters. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff at Premier at Perry Village for their compassion and care.

A celebration of life will be held at the Shermans Dale Ambulance Association on July 12, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. All who knew and loved Martha are welcome to join in remembering and celebrating her life.
