Nevin J. Stroup, 94, formerly of RD 1 Millerstown died Tuesday, February 22 at Autumn
House East in York, PA. He was born November 28, 1927 in Penns Creek, Snyder Co.,
the only child of Hattie U. Walter and Nevin W. Stroup. Nevin was raised by his mother
and grandparents, Waldo D. and Mary A. Walter, in Penns Creek during the Depression.
He attended Newport High School and his mother managed the Buffalo Inn on old Rt. 22.
Prior to graduating high school, Nevin started driving truck with his stepfather, helping to
haul priority loads during WW II. Upon graduating in 1945, he joined the Merchant
Marine and trained at Maritime Service Training Station Sheep’s Head Bay. He was
discharged from the SS Henry Adams, a Liberty Ship, in New Orleans, Louisiana on May
29, 1946 after completion of her voyage to Italy.
Nevin was inducted into the Army on 28 January 1949, and served for a year with the 5 th
MPs, 5 th Infantry Division, Camp Jackson, SC. He returned to active duty upon the
outbreak of the Korean War. While on a 90-day furlough, he married his high school
sweetheart Faye Elizabeth Smith on August 19, 1950.
Upon returning home in 1951 he resumed working with his mother who manufactured
Hattie’s Potato Chips in Millerstown. He developed his own snack food business and
eventually distributed Middleswarth potato chips in Perry County. He retired in 1989
after 43 years of delivering snack foods and running this business with his wife, Faye.
Mr. Stroup is survived by a son, Adam, and three grandchildren, Ryan Stroup, Erik
Stroup and Kalie Steffee. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2007 and by his son,
Daniel, in January 2022.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Millerstown, Loyal Order of
Moose, and American Legion. His hobbies were carpentry (furniture and crafts),
gardening and orcharding (apples, peaches and pears). He was a regular at the
Millerstown Senior Center and occasional bingo, cards and Wii Bowling player.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Church or other
charities.
