Peggy Jean Carl, 82, of Newport, passed away in Holy Spirit Hospital on Dec 18, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in Newport on April 2, 1941, to the late Wilbert and Elsie Troutman. She shared 61 years of marriage with Charles A. Carl Jr.
She graduated from Newport High School in 1959 where she was in the band front and in Chorus. She was on the Blue and White newspaper and Quill and Scroll literary magazine staffs. Among other high school interests were photography, Spanish, drama, and journalism. She was a voracious reader all her life and loved nothing more than to sit on her back porch in her rocking chair and read. After graduation, Peggy worked in the office of a cabinet company in Lewistown ,then began her career in banking at the First National Bank in Newport. Peggy retired after 41 years as head teller.
Peggy enjoyed traveling with her family in their RV all over Pennsylvania. She loved the Pa. State Parks and really enjoyed their cross country trip to Alaska visit Charles when he was in the Air Force. She traveled to Ocean City to visit Jim in the 1970s with her mother and sisters, an unforgettable memory. She flew with Marge and Lois to Disney World where they met Gerry and Don and niece, Tina, for a truly magical week. North Topsail Island was another fun trip with her sisters. Another place she loved is Williamsburg. Visiting craft shops and country stores with her daughter, Denise, was a favorite experience, which they did countless times. She loved watching or recording her soap operas and wore out several VCRs. Most of all she loved reading. Most significantly, it was the simple diners and evenings with her husband, children and grandson around her table or around a campfire, that she valued above all else
In addition to her husband, Peggy is survived by her son, Charles A. Carl III of New Bloomfield and daughter, Denise Maneval, of Mechanicsburg; one grandson, Ryan Carl of Benton, whom she adored; one sister, Lois Allwein (Michael); two brothers, Ken Troutman and Jim Troutman (Lori).
