Ray A Metzger, 84 of Newport died January 24 in the West Shore Hospital with his family at his side.
He was born November 29, 1937 in Duncannon, the only child of the late C. Arthur and Arletta
(Barkley) Metzger. Since 1940, he has lived in the same neighborhood in East Newport. Ray was a
1955 graduate of Newport High School, attended auto body training in Hershey, PA and completed
training at Atlantic Jet Engine school in Tampa FL in 1960. He worked for Alcorn Lincoln-Mercury and
Capitol Products and retired in 1995 with over 30 years service from the Newport liquor store, the last
15 as manager. He enjoyed attending auctions, was a constant tinkerer, an avid gun collector and a
master of many skills, built his own home, and could fix almost anything. In recent years he could be
found in the garage with son, Steve working on cars or just about anything mechanical. In 2011 he
was one of several people responsible for restoring the historic Mahanoy Union Church in Miller
Township. He was a life member of the NRA, a member of The Perry Historians and the Newport
First Church of God and a director of the Mahanoy Union Church. Ray is survived by his wife of
nearly 64 years, Judith K, his son Steven and wife Jeannie, and grandchildren Matthew and Joanna
all of Newport. At his request, no viewing or service will be held. Memorial contributions in Ray’s
