Obituary
Richard A. Gabel, 61 years old, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022 at his home in Newport. He was born October 6, 1960 to the late John R. and Beverly (Shick) Gabel.
Rich was a 1979 graduate of Newport High School and Cumberland Perry Vo Tech. He was employed by Sygma and part time for 38 years at C.H. Garage.He won in 1975 the watermelon seed spitting contest at the Perry County Fair and in 1979 the pancake eating contest (34 pancakes) at Vo Tech. He was a member of the Newport Fire Company, Newport Social Order of Owls, Oliver Grange and National Muzzle Loading Rifle Asso. He participated in Civil War reenactments.
Rich was preceded in death by his wife Darla Nye and is survived by his daughters, Angela Gabel of Newport and Phylicia Foster of Florida; brother John Gabel and wife
Karen of Newport; sister Sue Gabel of Newport and grandchildren Ash and Naci Foster.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, March 15 from 6-8 PM from the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 AM at the Wila Cemetery with Pastor Eugene Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Newport Fire Company.
