Robert M. Flickinger, at the age of 95, passed away February 19 at his home in Newport. He was born August 23, 1929 to the late Herbert Sr. and Margaret Flickinger. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He was a graduate of Newport High School. He was retired as co-owner of H.M. Flickinger & Sons. Bob was a Navy veteran, serving from 1947-1952 aboard the USS Raby.
His accomplishments and contributions were outstanding: Life member of Citizens Fire Company of Newport, Drum and Bugle Corps participant, member of Perry County Fireman's Association and past president, Perry County Fire Marshall for 12 years, PA State Fire School instructor, taught fire safety in many counties for 36 years, Perry County Sailors Association, Destroyer Escort Association, Sponsor Flight 93 National Memorial, Newport Boro Council and Sewer Authority, Central PA Blood Donor, Newport Lodge #381 F&M , Veterans Day Parade Marshall 2024 and 80 year life member of Newport American Legion Post 177.
Bob and his wife Nancy enjoyed traveling yearly to Navy reunions across the United States. He enjoyed Hershey Bear Hockey games, daily trips to Bittings Restaurant, all fire company activities, but most of all spending time with his family as he shared his love of ice cream and the firehouse.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy, his parents and brother Herbert Flickinger Jr "Judge". Surviving are his daughters Janice Zaring (Marvin) and Elaine Buffington (Bill),5 grandchildren: Jenniffer Bates (Chris) Jeffrey Zaring (Laurie), Jessica Bryson (Dave), Andrew Buffington (Denise) and Erin Buffington Myers, 16 great grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Zachary, and Logan Bates, Lexie, Landon, and Lucas Zaring, Tripp, Cash, and Jett Bryson, Drew Hockley, Zayden Myers, Carter and Makenna Buffington and Mason and Grant Kauffman; sister Beverly Shirk, sister in law Susan Stump (Bob) and numerous nieces nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held Friday, March 14 at 1 PM at the Newport Fire House with Pastor Mary Kay Miller officiating. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In Bob's honor, please wear patriotic colors to the service
