Samuel Carl Burd, 84 years old, passed away August 23 in Florida. Sam, the youngest of 6 children, was born March 7, 1931 in Newport to Ethel and Ray Charles Burd. In 1949 he met his wife of 55 years Norma Jane Gerringer, who predeceased him in 2005. They were married June 9, 1950 and had three beautiful children.
Sam "Poppa" Burd was a loving soul; he always had a funny saying, tall tale, or joke to lighten the mood. He loved to sing and you would often hear him belting out a favorite tune. Growing up on a farm he had a love for all animals. As he got older he had a special affinity for dogs and cared for several over the past 84 years. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his three children, Carla B. Collins, Elaine Field and Brian Burd, son-in-law Kris Field; 5 grandchildren; Radharani A. Collins, Tara C. Collins, Alex A. Field, Matthew C. Field, and Daniel G. Field; very close friend Sandra Staples, and 3 dogs; Maggie, Gracie and Chloe.
A Memorial Service will held on Saturday, September 12 at 11 AM at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport with the Pastor Mary Kay Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Danville. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 897, Hershey, PA 17033.
