NEWPORT: H. Ray Gabel, 93 years old, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015 at his home in Oliver Township, Newport. He was born March 7, 1922 in Newport to Harry S. and Jennie (Baker) Gabel. He was retired from farming and was a member of the Hope Eternal United Methodist Church, the Oliver Grange #1069, a lifetime member of the Newport Fire Company and member of the Perry County Farm Bureau. Ray was a beloved family man whose time was most fondly spent with family, working around the family farm and continuing the family legacy of transporting school children in the Newport School District since 1926.
Ray is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty J. (Clouser) Gabel; son, Gerald R. Gabel and wife Stacy; grandchildren, Patricia Fortenbaugh, Melissa Gabel and Matthew Gabel and great grandson, Jacob Fortenbaugh. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leroy Gabel and sisters, Carrie Gross and Wilma Smith.
Services will be held Wednesday from the Hope Eternal UMC, Newport with a viewing from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM with the Reverend John Feaster officiating. Burial will follow in the Newport Cemetery.
